Bellavinha draws attention to the colonial history of Brazil, Minas Gerais, and the museum itself through paintings and sculptures made with pigments derived from mining waste.
Starting December 14, the six front windows of the Museu da Inconfidência—a monumental late-18th-century building located in Praça Tiradentes, Ouro Preto (MG)—will be covered with white canvases equipped with a pumping device at the top that releases red paint. The intervention announces the exhibition Pranteio, by Minas Gerais–born artist Niura Bellavinha, the first woman to hold a solo show at the museum’s headquarters, presented with the support of AM Galeria de Arte.
The exhibition offers a contemporary gaze on the past, prompting reflection on Brazil today and the country we envision for the future. The bleeding windows evoke both Colonial Brazil and the nation in the 21st century.
